HW #8 - Commenting on Blog Partners - Video Project

To Lauren C.:
I liked how your transition on the video was very nice and the answers to the questions have a tone of yourself speaking out.

I think I understand how not having music sort of ruins the mood of the video and that you do look rather bored. I agree on how the teenagers do need the electronics/digital to pass their lives and not too much for the little ones yet. It is too early for them to ruin their eye sight! But yet again, I don't think we can stop them from coming near to the digital once they are in the age of needing them or really want to have them. Since I don't have a wii, I'm not too sure about the excitement but I do agree that since the wii came out, it seems more active with that game controller because you get to swing around, do exercise and not just sit there in front of a digital.

I think filming yourself just like that seems rather boring because you only see the game and not what you are also doing with the digital. Not adding music declines the mood down. As I've already said, it’s too early for the little ones to ruin their eye sight and I think its better for the little kids to be more active when they are young. I wouldn't want my kids to be like that but I'm fine with my sister, she got glasses already. (Just joking)

I think you can have developed your answers to the wii question because you seem to have more to say when I read it. I think you could have smile in the video too! But its a video better than mine.~

I also considered in my life now that I've seen your video of how everybody seem to look like the same when they are in front of a digital, they looked bored or doesn't seem happy. However once you strike something interesting in the internet you would feel surprise but somehow it's not capture in the video. I wonder why that happens?

Love your video, you looked gorgeous! Hope to read your next wonderful post!~^-^

To Na Lin:

Using your stuff animals as human and then putting them with the electronics was nice. Very creative of you. And the picture of the seal, now that you explain to me was very nice to open up the whole point of view you wanted to show. I think the major points in your post was about how technology is everywhere and like your answers said, that we love technology as much as we love playing with stuff animals when we are young (or now as well). And you said if we are getting bored with all these technologies floating around us and keeping us trapped in a one place, not going elsewhere physically? And you also mixed freedom in it that technology are restricting our freedom? I can connect how technology is spreading fast and affecting the Earth. We are quite needing to use our digital and that living in a digital era, we see a lot of electronics that we can't buy. Additionally, I agree with what you said about trapping ourself; we isolate ourselves in our room and started exploring the world out with the internet and then just using those informations that we have to put as our own. I feel as if we are in a virtual land, bad metaphor but hang on with that, that we are just using what others knowledge to put forth our own opinions and the view of the world. I thought you could have put more pictures about you (I mean not pictures of you but rather the technology that you are using, the pictures of how you view them, and I don't really mean pictures of the electronics you have) and less about the worldly view. I think that would show more of you than talking about the world because talking about the world is standard but about you, it's more understanding and lets me understand more about you. But my video is bad as well, yours is much better. After you publish your writing, I think you could have develop on what are the lies that you are talking about? Why is the world full of lies? And then you see people going online to get the information that are true, well the way we live in this world, we sort of have to think it is true. So do you think technology is a lie? Lol, can you explain a bit about the perfect world one because none of us are living in the perfect world. Are you living in a perfect world? Because we human have to pick up something new, like you said, that we are able to move on. But are you sure that means that it is free? Are we free to actually pick anything we want and use that to put it onto our path? What do you think? Do you think we can explore what we wanted, unlike going on to the internet and finding out stuffs and dream of it but rather physically go out and explore it? Or do we need a lot of money or some way to do that? It considers in my own life how everyday I come home, I would open my computer to either check my mail, surfing on the web or do my homework on the blogger/typing on the microsoft word. It seems that we might not needed but because we humans wanted to have an easier life that we choose the digital than not the digital. I don't really think technology will stop and even if it will, the time won't stop for us, the time that we have stop for us because we can't deal as easily living unlike the ones back in time. And then you said about freedom; do you mean freedom as in what makes you happy? Because a lot of us use the computer to be happy, for entertainment like what Andy said in class. Or do you mean freedom as in "trapped" in this room with the electronics that we have? Wonderful stuff animals, wish I have that much. Always happy to read your intriguing post. Hope to read more next time and the next and the next, next, next, next.... ^-^~

HW 6 Jia Min H. Digital Slideshow

Jia Min H. Photo Digital Slideshow from Jia Min on Vimeo.

*note* this vimeo is a slideshow and I apologize that I wasn't able to take a picture of me using the digital electronics I have. Really sorry, (also explained in the slideshow).
When watching this slideshow of mine, I thought the photos that I took in the beginning was standing out because it was related to mostly of the electronics that I use. Since the pictures was taken by me it felt weird and didn't really know how to fit in with the other photos. As well as the feeling of exposing to others about what electronics that I have. I didn't really mind the anime pictures because it has already been expose but it was awkward showing my possessions. It was fun making the slideshow but also tiring as I went along to put in effects and etc. In my mind, I kept thinking, "what should I put?" or "does this look well?" and the whole matching with the sequences had troubled me.
Whether or not I would want, for example, my little sister to spend her time with digital is her choice. I will tell her that it would be bad because I have experienced it but because she didn't, she would be pushing herself to want to try what I don't want her to try. But I also don't want her to spend her time just sitting in front of an electronic for too long. I rather she read or write or go out and play in the park or elsewhere instead of gluing her eyes in front of the screen. Too bad, they don't have any anti-digital equipment to ward the children off.
Even though I'm not on the slideshow but when I tried filming my sister for a little while (though it failed), she was very concentrated on the game she was playing. Her eyes didn't blink as much as it would if she read a book. When I move my hand back and forth from the screen, she didn't seem to notice as well and she moves her head to see what's going on when I blocked the screen. Afterwards, I think when you are captured in a video and see yourself in it, you will realize how it is different if you look back at yourself rather than thinking about how you look in the video. What I mean is that you are concentrated on the electronic but sometimes on the video, you look zoned out or that you seem very concentrated like my sister that your face are sad-looking or not a happy face. But, yea, I think you are different from the video.

HW 7 Interviews and Surveys

Question to member of the family:
Why do you think that we are obsess in going on to the digitalization such as Facebook with checking the notifications and the new things that are up on their pages or others pages?

She said that because they want to make "friends" on Facebook and "they would want to keep in contact with people and to play new games there". She also answered that "Maybe some people believed that people that they know in this country does not 'match' them or they can't go hang out with them. However, making new friends that are from another country may be new sparks and new interests to people".
Then I ask, to get more answers, "what do you think about what those people are feeling when using these electronics or going on Facebook to do what they are doing?"
She answered, "Either they are happy with using the electronics because 1) they are able to enjoy the pleasure of using this new electronics, 2) like on Facebook, they might be lonely and looking for someone to be friends and talk to, 3) connecting to Facebook, such as for the guys, they would want to find a girlfriend or someone to flirt with (and she heard stories about it too).

Edit: September 23, 2009:
What was the worst and best modern inventions and why?
The Passerbys' answers
Passerby #1: The male said that the best invention was the seranrap (not sure of the spelling and didn't want to interrupt the man). He said the modern inventions are wonderful because of its marvelous form of communication. The quality of information is very nice (because its always upgrading). However the bad or worst modern inventions was events like the meltdown of the Wall St. How the inventions can be misused because of greed. He also said interesting statement that the content of the mind comes first, that we came up with the ideas thats how things can get worse. However the sharing information was good use.

Are you able to live without your electronic or are you able to still have fun without it?
Passerby #2: The man uses the electronic a lot, like the blackbery or "crackbery" for being addictive, a drug. He uses almost the whole day and it seems like everybody has to use electronics everyday because of the advantage of being able to communicate and surfing the web. He said we can't live without it and use the electronics all the time and mostly everywhere.

Edit on: 9/26/2009
Friend:
Being born in the digitalization period, how does the technology and electronics affect how you spend your time?
She answered that she have to practically use it everyday like anybody else because she has to communicate with others. She has to use it for homework where she doesn't have to read from the book because the internet has pages of the text she needs to read. And in her free time to download and listen to music or watch videos and chatting with her friends. She said she "basically use it (digital) to communicate". She feels easier with having electronics around her than not having it because we are so use to it and we need to do things on it on the computer or the phone to accomplish a lot of our tasks.

HW #4 & #5~ Triangular Comments 1 and Commenting Back

Amber:

I think it is great how you are start with “their eyes glued to screens”. Your tone when you write your blog was very curious or a lot of energy talking about who can stand to face not using electronic. Your ideas of the usage of electronics comparing with the olden times were very interesting.

Your ideas toward, like I have said before, on taking up the risk of trying to not use electronic for a period and how the usage of electronic is non stop and always on because we need it even though we don’t need it as much as we use it.

I can see how being in front of the computer, surfing the web, social networking and etc can take away the time we do other things. I can also connect how the people who are attached to the electronics use so much usage of electricity, thinking that there are unlimited electricity, making us sort of unable to understand how badly we are destroying the environment (not too sure) and damaging our eyes and body. Sometimes I wish I can go back to the past to understand even though they are in need of electronics, why they don't use as much electronics as we have now.

I think it would be interesting to develop like an imagination of how you would be if you are without as much electronics as the people in the past or how it would be if there is a person that takes the risk. Or maybe you can compare the time with the computers and the time with the family, how the computer/electronic time are taking away with family time or other things time.

What you wrote makes me consider in my own life how it would be, for real, that we are able to connect with each other without so much of the electronic where we can look at people's faces and talk with them using our ability to talk, hand motions and expressions. Wondering if I can just sit in front of somewhere, like the park or the nature that has no electronics (getting too much but yea) that I will be able to just zone out or imagine without the screen of a computer popping in my mind now and then. Because like you said, we use it as often as our daily needs and even though we are able to get all those informations in a second when it occurs, it still seemed very likely that we are able to back out of that electronic easily and tried to live without it. (I hope you understand what I am saying xD)

It was awesome reading your post, got me thinking more about the risk of not using the electronics. Hope to read your next post!

Yu Xi:

The way you start of talking about how it is not strange was to me, agreeable because we are living through and was born through as the digitalization develops. Also I absolutely agree with what you wrote in your blog such as the "reality TV" that I haven't thought about it yet.

I can see how you wrote a lot about how our language changes as we use the social networking sites and the aim and texting because our social etiquette have changed. Maybe because we are born in the digitalization era that we and the people that are older, with the formal front they give to us makes us hard to "associate" with them with the formal English language and not the web language. Additionally, you wrote about how the old ways are replaced by the electronics like the "snail mail is replaced by e-mail," and etc. However, you also added at the end how because of the fuel used to make the digitalization that we are taking a lot from the environment, making it worse.

I agree how communicating online can make it seem less real than talking to the real person in front of you because you would never know what you expect from them, through their reactions and their expressions on their face when you tell them these things. Because it is "personal" what we are trying to tell the other person that makes it hard to tell it through online. However, sometimes, we speak through each other through online just to greet each other or find out each other when we don't actually see each other but needs help from each other (got sort of confuse with what I am saying here...so much "each other").

i can you can develop the "Reality TV" because in a way, the people who direct the Reality TV are putting our life experiences in there, making the digitalization world combine with the reality. Yes, making just a video that is funny to the people can make you popular just using Youtube and the online and how showing their private lives out makes me think the maker of that video are the standing out person. And etc. etc... then they "sprouted", becoming famous and popular. xD

I feel that I am an observer, but also as well as the spoken person but unlike the ones in the videos or the celebrities, it is hard to produce those talented acting or like the reality tv that they are able to show their private lives, in my thinking, easier than I would show mine. In a way, I can see that they want attention but in a way, everybody wants attention and that there are going to be people who are brave enough to come out to entertain us lot. But, we just receive like that, taking it in and laughing if it is funny or eyes widen if it is interesting. On the other hand, when you talk about the environment, it is deeply concerned that we are using too much of what we shouldn't use before we ran out completely but I don't think we can stop it because it is the human development (or something) that makes us need these resources/materials in Earth. I think a lot of times, we take it for granted, and what I said before, people entertaining other people but as we comment on their videos or blogs, etc do we actually appreciate it or are we just saying thanks so easily?

It was great reading your blog, and wrote something that I haven't thought of, the Reality TV and a lot of the replacement that electronic has took over. Excited to read your next post!

Commenting Back:

Hey Yu Xi!~

Thanks for reading my blog, and your funny tone when you were having the same pain in the eyes while looking in the "glare" of the computer screen. Also having the same thought as I have.

Your point on developing on the parent comments was useful because we haven't really talked about it but then I have been thinking about it for a long time. Our parents would always nag us when we get too close to the screen or listening to the music very loudly.

I have been thinking about the comparison between the rural areas with the technology areas and all the versions of a same model electronic. However because we are living in a technology area and going to school, all the homeworks and printing we needed are from the computer. You made me thought about how all the electronics we needed, besides helping us in doing homeworks and stuff, are just here to entertain us. That we need something to entertain us to pass the time.

It feels as if your blog post was about how we are born with the technology and how we use those technologies to fulfill the desire in us of wanting some kind of entertainment. And the electronics is the one. Where as I am talking about if having the technology gone, what would we do? and as well as how we are isolating ourselves with these electronics and living within the digital realm rather than socializing with others. However, both of us have something about the social etiquette and mannerism where it is rude to have the electronics out with others around and how our language is declining because of the way we text our messages.

I think both our post and comments are talking about how electronics are affecting our lives in a bad and good way and we both see how this is affecting the environment and our bodies. Because we are using all the resources and materials to create all these versions of electronics that we need to upgrade or that to upgrade ourselves to show to the world we have these new versions. Additionally our tad obsessiveness of needing these electronics and the way we use it to our advantage to make something out to show themselves to the world.

Na Lin:

To Na L.:

Thank you for reading my messy blog and for agreeing with most of what I said. Right, my arguments were rather messy but I'm trying to think back and forth about what I'm trying to say. As to the main points in my post was about comparing between the rural and the city place and whether it would be good to have these or have that. Yes, I need to proofread on my thoughts. Thanks for pointing it out. But your point on how we are all like children is true, and made me thought more of how that connects to having the world as perfect. Because we are like children, we can't make the world perfect because as children, they can only seem to know whats right or wrong in the general but as for deeper thoughts like buying the newer versions of the electronics, it doesn't seem to stick to our mind that much. To clarify about the ideas, it is more of thoughts that I am complying and then trying to argue back and forth. (But its okay if you were confuse, I was too as I was writing my thoughts). I feel as we are just too excited when new things changed or gets upgrade when new electronics comes up and that we cannot wait but to be the first one to buy it. I think in your blog, you are as well talking about something I am not too sure because you have many topics within a topic. In a way, you're saying the electronics help you meet with other people that you might not even see face to face but I am saying that electronics affect socializing with the people you do actually face to face because the electronics takes up time from people (from socializing with the face to face people). But, I think my opinions changed a bit because interacting with others online is useful since we can learn from others cultures or identities, etc.. Both you and I seem to have in common is if the people that are using the electronics know that they are destroying the environment. Also those who made the electronics, the new materials needed for every upgrade, don't they think its wasteful? -Thanks for reading my blog- ^-^~

HW#3 (draft 2) initial thoughts about digitalization

As I am typing this post, it is better than writing it.
But...
My eyes kind of hurt.

When I think about how we have to use electronics every day and for almost all day long depending on the job we do, do we ever get tired of it? Do we think about going back to the rural places, where the only electronic technologies are the light bulb and maybe the phone and a bit of t.v. and internet. Sometimes I just wish to go the rural places and look more to the nature environment because whenever I looked at the bright screen of an electronic such as cell phone, television, and the computer for too long, it makes my eyes and brain hurt.

Digitalization is symbolizing for advancing in technology but I always wonder what about the people who live in the rural side. Or what about the people in the past? They would be wondering what is with this era of technology. Are they happy with the instruments that they are using and as well as the people with the electronics, are we happy with it? Because sometimes we will hate it and sometimes we love it because it helps us do everything. If the technology continues to develop, would it affect how our body is going to function or how would it affect the nature or the diseases.

Electronics and the digitalization are important because everybody needs the news and the music can help people to be in their own world, helping them relax. That's why the electronic is a need to our lives and even though it is obvious that everybody is unable to "live" without the electronics, it is not good for you if you use too much in a day. It is great that we are able to have all these electronics but sometimes it feels meaningless having so many versions of one electronics and then wasting the resources. But we just have to do that because we need developing and advancing to the next stage. I think that like one day, because of all these digital environments we are in, we might get mess up with the reality and the digital realm.

As I already said, electronics are a need for everyone but there are always the bad things like the bacteria that can go into your ears when listening to your music with headphones on. How looking at the screen too closely can make your vision worse. Staying on the computer for too long is bad for your health and secluding yourself with the online world isn't good. Electronics are interfering with the socializing but mostly to the people who stayed at home. This is the comments that most parents would give especially the ones that doesn't really use the electronics or understand about them.

It's good that we can connect and talk to other people through using the digital/electronics but I feel as though it is more isolating ourselves because when we talk on Facebook or instant messaging, we do not have to actually be with the person. I think it is less social with using the electronics and if I talk on my cellphone or listening on my iPod, they would say it is rude and I shouldn't do that, which I think is weird. We are allowed to use the electronics but if we use it at the wrong time, we take the blame.

Thoughts and Questions about Digitalization experience and phenomenon

When I think about how we have to use electronics every day and for almost all day long depending on the job we do, do we ever get tired of it? Do we think about going back to the rural places, where the only electronic technologies are the lightbulb and maybe the phone and a bit of t.v. and internet. Sometimes I just wish to go the rural places and look more to the nature environment because whenever I looked at the bright screen of an electronic such as cell phone, television, and the computer, it makes my eyes hurt.
It's good that we can connect and talk to other people through using the digital/electronics but I feel as though it is more isolating ourselves because when we talk on Facebook or doing instant messaging, we do not have to actually be with the person. I think it is less social with using the electronics and if I talk on my cellphone or listening on my iPod, they would say it is rude and I shouldn't do that. So I think that is weird. Electronics are interfering with the socializing.
Electronics and the digitalization are important because everybody needs news and like music can help people be in their own world, helping them relax. That's why the electronic is a need to our lives and even though it is obvious that everybody is unable to "live" without the electronics, it is important to every one of us. (Even though it is not good for you if you use too much in a day). It is great that we are able to have all these electronics but sometimes it feels meaningless having so many versions of one electronics and then wasting the resources. But we just have to do that because we need developing and advancing to the next stage. I feel like one day, because of all these digital environments we are in, we might get mess up with the reality and the digital realm.
